Bara to face Hekari in inaugural WNSL final

LAE Biscuit Company-sponsored Bara will look to win their first Women’s National Soccer League title when they face hosts Hekari United in tomorrow’s grand final in Port Moresbyc (3pm kick-off).
Coming off a 7-1 victory in the semifinals last weekend, the Susan Watpore-coached side worked on their finishing, midfield combinations and defence.
She told The National that her players were wary of the challenge in the form of coach Erickson Komeng’s Southern Conference winners.
“We’re counting on forward Nenny Elipas to pick up from where she left off in her two-goal performance last weekend,” Watpore said.
“Goalkeeper Irene Kenny had an improved performance with good saves last weekend, so our defenders will look to stop any goal-scoring opportunities by Hekari.”
Watpore said the team were made up grassroots players who had made club history by reaching their first grand final.
Meanwhile, Hekari worked on their combinations during training following last Saturday’s scare by National Capital District (NCD).
“Our combinations were not great last weekend, so we worked hard on them to produce more goal-scoring opportunities,” Komeng said.
“We’ve had a pretty good season to get this far, so we’re looking forward to facing Bara.”
Komeng will count on forwards Calista Maneo, Phyllis Pala and Sonia Embahe for goals while skipper Rumona Morris oversees the midfield.
Sisters Shalom and Serah Waida will look to combine with Georgina Bakani and goalkeeper Linda Bunaga to tighten their defence.
Meanwhile, NCD and Mommers will battle for third spot in the league at 11am.
Fixtures: Sat, June 18 – NCD v Mommers (11am), Hekari United v Bara (3pm).
