Wewak league suspends games to house displaced villagers

WEWAK Football Association has suspended this weekend’s games as the Sir Michael Somare Stadium is being used to accommodate the displaced Basis community.
This is the second week that games have being postponed due to tension between Mengar and Basis villages in Wewak.
Association general secretary Mervyn Mandawa said round one of week-three games would be played next week. “We have the displaced Basis community at our stadium,” he said.
“So we’ve given this week for them to be repatriated to their village.”
Mandawa said the association was worried about the safety of the clubs following the clash.
He said the postponement was also to show respect to those who had lost their lives and properties.
“All clubs understand the situation,” Mandawa said.
“It’s an issue on which the association will not comment.
“We’ll just concentrate on running the association and games to ensure all participating clubs are safe.
“We’ve advised teams to continue training.”
Meanwhile, Mud Skippers will be eyeing their third win of the season when they take on Caltex.
Former Mud Skippers patron Mandawa said the club had been impressive over the past two weekends.
“Mud Skippers are doing great so far after two games,” he said.
“They’re looking forward to claim the minor premiership and represent the association in the upcoming club championships,” Mandawa said earlier this week.
