The Taurama Barracks is to be closed off to the public at the end of March once the back road to the housing estate is completed.

This was revealed by Minister for Sports and Member for Moresby South Justine Tkatchenko.

“I will work with the PNGDF commander, Brig-Gen Albert Toropo to ensure that the transition is smooth and everyone is happy,” Tkatchenko said.

He said every barracks was responsible for providing security for the people and defending the sovereignty of the nation.

The closure of the barracks will ensure that the defence force will continue to work towards its upgrading.

Taurama Barracks Commanding Officer Stanley Benny said: “The PNGDF is a state servant and we are looking forward to the many changes soon to take place here at the barracks.

“The closing of the barracks, the upgrade and maintenance of infrastructure throughout the country and the constructing of the gymnasium here is a good sign that the PNGDF is expanding and growing for the good.”

He said the current manpower of 370 soldiers at the barracks would increase once new recruits passed out from Goldie Training Barracks.
