STUDENTS at Papa Primary School can now enjoy a proper sanitation system – thanks to Anglicare.

The project which was an initiative of Anglicare in partnership with PNG Water Aid includes six toilets, a female shower room and 11 hand washing facilities. There is a school wash committee.

Teacher Joy Vaguia said the school had been suspended twice for the poor standard of hygiene. She said the new facilities had taken care of that problem.

“The school was closed twice because our toilets were very unhygienic,” she said.

She said every time it rained, water flooded the toilet making it unusable forcing students to use nearby bushes.

Director for PNG Water Aid Rosie Wheen encouraged the students to keep the toilet clean and hygienic.

She said other people had done their small bit to assist in the constructions of the toilets.

“If you work alone, you do not succeed fast. But when you work with others, you get things done quickly and smoothly,” she said.

The toilet facility is one of the many developments the school needs.

The school management maintained the facilities well since the school’s establishment in 1977. But it did not have any electricity and water supply even though the classrooms are in a really good condition.
