THE Papua New Guinea Barramundis resumed training as a team at Amini Park on Monday, after being forced to train in groups of four due to Covid-19 restrictions. Barramundis skipper Assad Vala told The National yesterday that their training had been going well so far since they received approval from the national pandemic response controller via the PNG Sports Foundation (PNGSF). “It’s really good to be back training as a group again, for the last month or so, we have been training in small groups (of four),” Vala said. “To be back training as a group again is something that we really miss, we are like brothers, we like being together, that’s why to come back and train together is something we are happy (about).”
Vala said with impact of Covid-19, having the ICC men’s T20 World Cup pushed back had been disappointing, however, he was looking forward to getting back in the game. “It was really disappointing for the World Cup to be pushed back to this year, we really wanted to play in the World Cup, that’s all we wanted to do as a group,” he said. “As a team, we’re really motivated to go to the World Cup, so we’re training really hard.” With Barramundis named as the team of the year during Saturday night’s SP Sports Awards, Vala said it was a boost for the team.
