CONSTRUCTION of East Sepik’s Handar Bridge is to be completed this month, National Planning and Monitoring Department secretary Koney Samuel says. Located in the Numbo Local Level Government in Yangoru-Saussia, the 55m-long bridge will ease transportation to about 20,000 villagers. Samuel, who visited the project site, said he was impressed with the progress of the construction of the K10 million bridge funded by the Government. Handra ward councillor Jacob Hembiworo said for years locals had difficulty crossing the 40m-wide Handra River. “For the past 40 year, lives have been lost and vehicles have been washed away during the wet season.

In fact, a vehicle was washed away just yesterday.
“This bridge will change all that,” he added. Yangoru-Saussia MP Richard Maru said the bridge would be opened in a ceremony to be attended by national leaders. Construction work began last November. The bridge is expected to boost the local economy as transport problems would be eased significantly.
