CRICKET Papua New Guinea general manager Tony Naidu says after the seeing the performance of the Kumul Petroleum Barramundis in their maiden Twenty-20 World Cup, they have identified the areas that need more work.
“We weren’t seen as a cricket power before, but we are now,” he told The National.
“We’ve got respect from the world, in what we can do and how we play.
“We’ve now learnt more about the gap and what we did to get here.
“We did amazing to get here and now we understand what we have to do to get to the next stage.
“We have to work harder, we’ve got the talent, but they have to commit themselves too.
“We know the work that needs to be done.
“We’ve proven that we’re good enough and now we’ve got to show the world that we belong there.”
Naidu said he was proud of the Barramundis and for the country with the way everyone had backed the team throughout their campaign via social and mainstream media.
“We’ve announced PNG to the world of cricket and the country has responded to that, which is exciting,” he said.
“For anyone who thinks losing three games is an embarrassment, it’s not, we went up to that level and showed what we can do.
“We got bowled for 87 runs against Bangladesh, but we still showed the fight that this country has.
“What we want to do with the Barramundis, Lewas and Garamuts, is to represent this country with pride. “Win or lose, it is sports, but we’ll go out and play our style, play without fear like Kipling (Doriga) did.
“The world knows now that we can field, we can score runs and hit sixes, they know we can do all these, we’ve got to do it.
“What we do next now is to get that whole game, we have to build to that because when you play the top teams, they don’t let off.
“Each game, we could have had different results, but we didn’t have the experience yet and the experience is playing more cricket.
“Playing at that level and feeling that you belong will boost you to perform well.”
