BASIC human development training and short business courses can empower Papua New Guinea’s youth’s to be successful in life, a college principal says.
Speaking at the Hohola Community College’s (HCC) 17th graduation ceremony in Port Moresbyrecently, principal Susuve Sevesoa said young people who dropped out of the formal educational system need opportunities to further their studies and become self-reliant valuable members of society.
Sevesoa said through a partnership with the United Church, the college had been providing multipurpose courses for youths over the last 20 years.
“Training people to get formal employment and sustain themselves is the best thing that can happen,” he said.
Sevesoa told the 53 students, who passed out with certificates in various business courses, that the whole idea was to ensure young people who had missed out on continuing their education in the formal system still had skills they could use to earn a living.
The college teaches certificate level business courses with Christian values incorporated to mould youths to be better citizens.
“The school offers training in business studies, integral human development and early childhood teacher training over a three-month period,” Sevesoa said.
Justice Department crime prevention executive director Zachary Sitban said acquiring knowledge and skills and using it to better oneself was the key to empowering youths in the country. He said the department encouraged the graduates to do something worthwhile.
