THE Basketball Federation of Papue New Guinea is set to host the Federation International Basketball Association (Fiba) Under-15 Oceania championships from Dec 4-8 in Port Moresby.
BFPNG chief executive Stephen Damien said the National Government and Fiba Oceania has made it possible to stage the championship.
“Fiba has given us A$40,000 (K93,075) which will be sourcing out to help run the competition, pay for insurance, accommodations and other costs,” Damien said.
Damien said the Government component had yet to be confirmed and announced.
Damien, however, appeal to the corporate sector to come on board and support the event and in particular junior basketball in PNG.
“This is going to be great investment as our youngsters need thyis kind of tournaments to get better, to develop and become the country’s next representatives.
“Preparations are going on very well and part of that is selling tickets for the championship.
Damien said the ticket prices would range from K20 to K5 and invited the public to support the sport and the country’s juniors as they take on the region’s best including New Zealand and Australia.
Damien said seven countries — PNG, Australia, New Zealand, Guam, Fiji, Samoa and Tonga — had confirmed their attendance (male and female teams).
All games will be played at the Taurama Aquatic Centre and Indoor Centre.
“This is a great opportunity for our youngsters to go to the next level if they qualify for the Asia Cup,” he said.
