CASSOWARIES batsman Sese Bau top-scored for his team with an impressive 83 not out runs off 44 balls in their 36-run win over the Mudmen in yesterday’s Hebou Shield T20 fixture.
The Barramundis batsman claimed the player-of-the-match award for his effort at Amini Park, Port Moresby.
Cassowaries captain Jack Vare chipped in with 36 runs from as many balls as his side posted 177/3 and ended any hopes the Mudmen, who managed 141/7 in response, had of sneaking into the finals.
“It feels good being the player of the match and I think my contribution helped us win,” Bau said.
The 26-year-old has been a consistent performer for PNG since making his international debut three years ago.
Bau has been playing cricket since he was 15 years-old and enjoys the challenge of pitting his skills with the bat in the fast T20 format.
“I started off in the village competition and later joined Port Moresby competition.
“In 2011, I was selected to play with the national team when I was 19, and I have been playing since then.”
Bau said his goal was to make runs and be consistent in order to retain his spot in the Barramundis.
“I have been training really hard because I aim to make the team for the ICC World T20 East Asia Pacific Qualifier this month in Fiji,” he said.
The Cassowaries have a game left against the Mariners tomorrow which could decide who makes Sunday’s grand final.
The Hebou Shield tournament is Cricket PNG’s premier first class competition that involves the 48 best cricketers in the country.
The players were divided into four teams — Mariners, Cassowaries, Mudmen and Black Bass — competing over the last two weeks.
