THE public, including children, should be more conscious and careful when crossing the road, a police officer said.

Waigani Police Station commander Jack Wesil said three hit-and-run cases in Waigani occurred during the Pacific Games. Two were not reported.

“Two traffic officers nearly got ran over by a vehicle after the hit-and-run happened,” Wesil said.

“This vehicle was not supposed to be using the priority lane.

“It was unfortunate that no police vehicle was around at the time so the vehicle got away,” Wesil said of the hit-and-run on Sunday.

He called on motorists and pedestrians to take heed of the diversions put in place by the police.

“Please, I urge the public to have some sense of caution and be more responsible,

“When you’re trying to cross the road, always be aware that vehicles using the priority lane will be coming at speed.”

He said motorists who are in a hurry were the ones, who ignore simple traffic rules and diversions.

Port Moresby General Hospital nurse Freda Enna, who attended to the hit-an-run victim on Sunday, said people in the city should be more observant of traffic rules.
