Be careful with stance on international issues

Letters

PAPUA New Guinea’s foreign policy is based on a “friend to all and enemy to none” approach, which is why the country should be very careful on how it positions itself in the tensions between the geopolitics of Western and Eastern economic superpowers.
The current situation in Ukraine dates back to some decades and eight years of civil war with its own people before Russia deployed its troops for the special operation to demilitarised its neighbour.
PNG is not Australia.
We are a poor and developing nation with many foreign countries, businesses and organisations interested in investing in our country as we strive to advance in line with our development goals.
PNG has built a strong bilateral partnership with the People’s Republic of China over the years.
Just recently, Prime Minister James Marape and his delegates visited China and made huge progress in trade negotiations into the future.
Our biased and ill-advised stand on such issues of international geopolitical interests might cause a destabilisation in our economy.
China is close friends with Russia and is willing to sustain support and relations with Russia.
PNG should revoke its stance on the Russia-Ukraine issue and remain neutral.
What is PNG doing?
