WITH many parts of the country trying to get back on their feet after the recent earthquake, University of Goroka (UOG) students have been mocked, criticised and ridiculed which has resulted in cyber bullying and defamatory posts.
According to posts online, issues discussed were:

  • The walk of sorrow;
  • The loss of an iconic structure;
  • The loss of a home;
  • The disturbance to the academic calendar; and,
  • AID.

Students have indeed lost their home and the university, it’s pride.
However, we call ourselves “nation builders”, “king makers”, “the country’s backbone”, “educators”, etc…but just how educated are we that we resort to rubbing mud on ourselves and walk the streets bare-chested in self-pity?
I am a student at UOG but I don’t understand is the logic in all of this.
It seems that we are “elites” who do not act according to the standard of our education.
Many other parts of the country have suffered in the disaster (earthquake) and have gone through worse, losing more than what we (UOG) have.
As a matter of fact, in other areas, people have died.
And yet they take it all in and start looking for ways to rebuild and fix themselves instead of weeping around the streets.
We are being criticised because we did not act up to our level of education and professionalism!
And don’t use this “Pasin Melanesia” nonsense as an excuse.
This is a university.
We should be acting as educated professionals instead of making fools out of ourselves and being criticised by the whole nation!
