Be responsible for your children’s education, parents told

PARENTS of students attending the Fr Peter Secondary School in Fatima, Jiwaka, have been told to take full responsibility of their children’s education.
Principal John Aipeta said parents have an important role to play in the education of their children.
Aipeta, while thanking the national government for the tuition fee subsidy and the Catholic Church for the upkeep of the institution, said that to run an institution like Fatima, which has more than 1000 students, 500 of are boarders, is not an easy.
“We run Fatima with K1.7 million every year,” he said.
“This year we received K632,000 in tuition fee free ( TFF) funds .
“Parents paid only K31,000. So we had a very huge cash shortfall of over a million kina.
“We are very thankful to the Catholic Church for ensuring that we complete this year successfully,” Aipeta said. He told parents that they are supposed to pay more than K100,000 in total, adding that their parental contribution was not enough.
“Every time we ask for parental assistance, they (parents) tell us that the government is paying for their children’s education and they should not take any burden.
“This is a completely wrong mentality.
“Parents are important stakeholders in the welfare and education of their children.
“And they are the ones responsible for bringing this young innocent children into this world and they should not give any excuses when we ask them to help,” Aipeta stressed.
He said this year they have used about K700,000 while the Catholic Church has helped to meet the rest of the cost to end the year.
