Beekeeping training complete

Business

THE 34 people who completed a week-long training on beekeeping in Eastern Highlands are expected to earn good income from it.
Unngai-Bena MP Benny Allan said honey produced in Bena, known as Goroka Honey, by Tella Loie and his wife, would soon be known as Bena Honey.
Loie thanked Allan for supporting the training saying the apiculture project fitted in well with subsistence farmers.
“I spent 38 years with the agriculture department and when I finished, I was given K23,000 that I invested in bees,” he said.
“The business has developed.
“In 2018, I produced 1,000 boxes, in 2019 I produced 1,500 boxes and in 2020 I got 2,000 boxes.
“This year, I am aiming for 6,000 boxes.”
Loie said they needed to pass on the skills and knowledge on beekeeping to young people.
“We produce bee farmers through training who later on become experts in this area,” he said.
Trainer Francis Dolpare said PNG produced top quality honey, especially from Bena.
