GOLD production at Newcrest Mining Ltd’s Lihir operation in New Ireland is unlikely to be affected by the suspension of flights between PNG and Australia.
Newcrest, in a market release, said it was assessing the implications of the two-week travel suspension.
“Newcrest is working closely with the Australian government to understand details of the travel suspension and to determine and mitigate any potential impacts,” it said.
“The Lihir operation is undergoing a planned maintenance shutdown and is in the process of progressively starting up.
“There is no anticipated interruption to gold production arising as a result of the travel suspension.
“The health and safety of Newcrest’s people and the local community are of primary concern.
“A small number of the Covid-19 cases among the workers are being managed by Newcrest at Lihir.
“Patients are in quarantine and are monitored by our medical staff.
“Strict hygiene, social distancing and other Covid-19 management protocols remain in place at Lihir with comprehensive testing, quarantine and precautionary contact tracing procedures enforced. “
