PAPUA New Guinea’s boxing fraternity farewelled former Commonwealth champion and boxing legend Martin Beni in Port Moresby yesterday following his passing on Oct 27.
Martin’s grandson, Francis Beni, paying tribute during his funeral service, described him as simple man outside the ring who gave his life to his family and boxing.
“He loved his simple life at his home of Sero, Taurama, and together with his wife, children and grandchildren, he couldn’t ask for more,” he said.
“He was always happy and content with what he had.
“He was a strong old man, even though he was old, he would do everything and anything for his grandchildren and would most times take them to school.
“Even if it means to catch bus or walk. That is how much he loved his grandchildren.
“We are gathered here today because of our father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather, mentor, coach, idol, model, national icon and champion.
“We are here are here because of the love and good examples he has shown to us.
“His last words, witnessed by daughter-in-law Anna Dewillie, were ‘I’ve had enough, I am going home’ after throwing his jacket to the floor.
“During his old age, he continued to train boxers and promote the sport in any way he could.
“Even if he wasn’t feeling well, he would always check on boxers.
“Sometimes he would get into arguments with his wife and children because he loved the boxing so much.”
Martin’s nephew, Richard Kassman, said Beni was a pioneer in the sport and would go down in the country’s history as a boxing legend.
“The late Martin was part of a special group of people in his time,” he said.
“Their hands built blocks, a solid foundation upon which a nation was built.”
