THE late Martin Beni’s deeds in boxing did not go unnoticed and he was awarded and celebrated for his contribution to the sport, according to Richard Kassman.
Kassman, who is the nephew of Geraldine Phillis Leka Tarino, Beni’s wife, paid tribute to the late Martin on Monday and described him as the ultimate role model in sports in Papua New Guinea.
“With due recognition, the State awarded Martin Beni Order of Logohu recognition,” he said.
“He was bestowed the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal. He received further recognition on a K1.20 postage stamp.
“Two-time winner of PNG national sports awards, he represented his nation successfully in the amateur and professional ranks.
“These are only some of his medals of recognition, he coached and mentored in his beloved sport of boxing.
“Many of our people identify this man as their hero.”
Oceania Fight Promotions director Maryanne Millie said Beni’s boxing career left a lasting legacy of hope and pride for PNG as an emerging nation.
“Beni’s talent and gift brought two things, hope and a sense of pride for Papua New Guineans leading to Independence,” she said.
“He will be remembered in PNG for his calibre and that anything in life is possible as long as you put your mind to it.
“The paramount thing that Beni did was, he demonstrated democracy in the boxing ring in those days leading towards Independence.”
