POMAFL cancels 2021 season over Covid-19 worries

PORT Moresby Australian Football League (POMAFL) yesterday cancelled its 2021 season over concerns around the Coronavirus (Covid-19) on sports gatherings around the country.
“After careful consideration, the remainder of the 2021 Moni Plus POMAFL season is hereby cancelled,” league president Douglas Lai said.
“Surely it has not been an easy decision to make, however, I trust that it is the right decision during this Covid-19 period.
“This decision will take effect immediately and many thanks for all the efforts to keep AFL going with excitement early this year and before the lockdown.
“I also take this time to wish you all and your families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
Lai told The National that the cancellation would see no premiers for the competition’s three divisions with clubs and players urged to prepare for next season.
“There will not be any premiers for the 2021 season,” he said.
“We had three very competitive divisions in the 2021 season, the A-grade men, premier reserves, and A-grade women.
“So it would be unfair to select a premier for each division.
“I suggest for players to maintain their fitness and remain healthy to prepare for the new season.
“Clubs should also get themselves organised for the season which I assume will start as early as March.
“In saying this, we can only hope for better days ahead with the pandemic, and hopefully, sporting life returns to normal around the country.”
