Beon inmates rated cheap but good carpenters

Inmates at Beon Jail in Madang can provide the cheapest carpentry work with the best results, says jail commander Andrew Polis.
He said this yesterday when handing over the keys for a modern mess for Guard Dog Security in Madang, which was built by 15 Beon inmates.
Polis said it was part of the inmates’ rehabilitation programme.
Work started in February.
Polis said the 15 inmates and three jail officers designed the mess.
“CIS officers and 15 inmates designed the mess before constructing it,” he said.
Three of the inmates were classified as minimum security, five were juveniles and seven were low-risk.
“I am now giving an open invitation to schools, churches or other organisations in Madang to use Beon, which has the cheapest carpenters,” Polis said. Inmates Philip Chris, Bryan Kevengu and Chris Lazarus were excited to be out of prison doing something good for the community.
Kevengu said: “When I finish serving my term, I will know how to lay bricks.”
Lazarus said: “I’m happy that I did something for the community while I was serving my term as a prisoner.”
Guard Dog security barracks commander Kilas Piok said 270 security officers on day and night shifts would use the mess hall.
He thanked the inmates for building it.
Guard Dog Security gave the inmates tools to continue their work.
