WHILE many Papua New Guinean were celebrating the 35th Independence celebrations, police in Bereina in the Kairiku district of Central were manning roadblocks to check on illegal movements of drugs and alcohol.
Policemen in arms were observed thoroughly checking vehicles and passengers for drugs and other contrabands from Tapini and all points to Kerema.
Policeman Andrew Aisi said that they had been tipped about possible movements of huge drugs coming from the Goilala area to Port Moresby markets and police had set two separate roadblocks to ensure that they missed nothing.
The second roadblock was
some metres into the road
leading to Goilala while the first was at Goilala-Kerema junction.
He said “Operation Gulf-Central” was to make sure the people travelled safely on roadworthy vehicles.
Aisi said although they lacked logistics that would ensure the public enjoyed the celebrations they took part in.
