THE ban on betel nut in Boroko begins today, says city manager Benard Kipit.
Kipit said the ban would apply in the commercial and public areas.
“No chewing of betel nut, no spitting of betel nut and no selling of betel nut in Boroko,” he said.
“We will also be enforcing no littering in the Boroko area.”
Kipit said the ban was only for Boroko.
“We are using Boroko as a model project by enforcing a partial buai ban in the area,” he said.
“We are appealing to the public to understand and cooperate with us in building a cleaner and safer city.
“If the pilot project is successful, the betel nut ban will be extended to other parts of the city.”
Kipit said the ban in Boroko would be enforced by the police and the Corps Security firm.
“We are not engaging any city rangers at the moment. So if there are people pretending to be city rangers harassing you, you can report them to the police,” Kipit said.
“Only the police and the Corps Security firm are authorised by the NCDC to work with us in enforcing the ban.”
N’Dranou urged members of the public to upold the law.
