Police officers who shot tear gas into a school in Hohola have been stood down from active duty, says NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’Dranou.
N’Dranou apologised to a school in Port Moresby for the actions of his policemen and said that what the officers did was wrong.
Sacred Heart Primary School was hit by a tear gas shot by policemen who were trying to enforce the partial betel -nut ban which was only meant for Boroko and not Hohola.
N’Dranou apologised to the school, students and teachers.
“The officers involved have all been stood down from active duties and we will take additional disciplinary actions against the officers,” he said.
“That is not the way policemen should behave and I apologise on behalf of the officers.”
He said members of the public should report to the nearest police station police officers who misbehaved.
NCDC City Manager Benard Kipit criticised the actions of the police officers and clarified that the partial betel nut ban was only for Boroko.
“Due to the past betel nut ban enforcement, many people who heard of the partial betel nut ban thought it was the same thing and have taken advantage of the partial ban.,” he said.
“But the partial ban is only for the Boroko area.
“Only the Police and the Corps security will enforce the partial ban and that NCDC has not engaged any city rangers to enforce it,”
