Betel nut issue

Letters

POWES Parkop and NCDC have failed to enforce the betel nut ban because they have targeted the wrong people: the sellers.
People who should be targeted are the chewers. Many of them are individuals with no regard for rubbish, health or hygiene.
They are the ones throwing betel nut skins and spittle all over the place.
The sellers, like everyone else, want to make a living and there is no law stopping them from selling.
Betelnut in not considered a dangerous drug.
However, in trying to keep the city clean, NCDC should take control and start zoning the city into no-betel nut-chewing zones and start allowing selected places for chewing.
People should be banned from chewing in selected public areas such as in public transport, schools, hospitals and Government buildings.
People should be allowed to chew in their homes, in private properties or outside the selected no-betel nut-chewing zones
which could be in suburbs or settlements.
Private companies and organisation can assist by not allowing their employees to chew betel nut during working hours in their premises.
With the new NCDC manager, this should be a way forward.
