Betel nut vending continues despite SOE

NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop is frustrated with betel nut traders, saying despite a ban under the state of emergency regulations, trading is continuing.
“In the space of one day, you can see people defacing one entire street with betel nut spittle,” he said.
“This shows that we have not learnt anything from the SOE.
“We cannot relax and we cannot go back to the way we used to live before.”
Parkop said he had already met with relevant stakeholders to have public buses and taxis betel nut-free.
“If the Covid-19 comes later on and we continue to spit betel nut everywhere, I can assure you that it will spread and destroy all of us.”
Parkop said people spitting betel nuts was being irresponsible and not taking ownership of their city.
“Public properties belong to all of us but if you refuse to take ownership, I am telling you now, that these properties are mine as the governor,” he said. “If you are spitting and doing graffiti on public property, you are insulting me by damaging my property.
“The road you spit on is my property because we (NCDC) have built it, including other infrastructure in the city. We have the right and power over the road infrastructure and other public properties in the city, therefore, if the public does not take care of them then I can deny them the access and right to use them.”
Meanwhile, Parkop said NCD had done really well in responding to the Covid-19.

  • The law is there already but policing it is a problem. Whoever is contracted to police the law must be serious in carrying out its responsibility. Those responsible for policing must stay there for many hours, not just come and take what they want and go. After they are gone , betel nut sellers reappear again to sell. By the way, how about those selling betel nuts at the traffic lights? I’ve always thought may be law enforcement agencies don’t ever see or come across them. What a complete breakdown of the law created to safeguard public health and safety gone wrong.

  • Total ignorance insane people we are especially we know who we are despite rules and regulations in place. I was out in Pom DownTown recently and saw one gentleman spitting real red shit in the drain like nobody cares. I thought to myself where’s the Law Enforcers and wish I was one of the Law Enforcers in disguise at the time would have slapped the whole mouth with red shit. Very disgusting to see our people doing this without thinking first. Don’t know when we’ll listen na harim tok. I think if PNG breaks up into smaller countries of similar people like ABG bai iorait na easy to manage with like minded people. Too big country na planti senseless people na hard long toktok.
