FLOOD victims on Erima St, Hohola two, in Port Moresby are calling on city authorities to fix the drainage system near their homes which overflowed during rainy weather and flooded their homes.
Most of the houses in the area are low covenant houses and the downpour on Saturday night generated floods up to waist high which damaged their belongings.
Resident Anna Steven, 57, a widow, from Central, who lives with her family said this was an ongoing issue that had not been addressed despite multiple complaints being raised with the National Capital District Commission.
“When the flood came, it removed our washing machines, the fridge, even our stoves,” she said.
“We previously went and put a report but nothing happened.
“Last night, it (flood) came, we took everything out from the water. All the clothes, bags and everything was in the water.
“The water came as far as the waist, last night’s (Saturday) flood was the worst.”
The residents first reported the situation in 2016 and again last year to the NCDC health and engineering division but nothing was done.
They are now calling for NCDC to address the drainage issue and also asking for financial assistance to replace their damaged property.
