CLIMATE Change and Development Authority (CCDA) acting managing director Debra Sungi says there is a need for better reporting and accountability of climate change funding and programmes in the country.
“Article 13 of the Paris Agreement establishes the enhanced transparency framework and parties of the agreement are required to prepare and submit biennial transparency reports.
“As a party of the agreement, PNG is also required to prepare and submit its progress reports for the last four years by the end of this year as per the rules of implementing the enhanced transparency framework.
“Our commitment to the Paris Agreement demonstrates PNG’s unwavering dedication to mitigating climate change impacts and preserving our invaluable natural resources.
“Through rigorous reporting and accountability measures, we aim to set a global standard for environmental stewardship,” she said.
Sungi made these remarks at the inception workshop for the preparation of PNG’s first biennial transparency report and Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) technical annex in Port Moresby yesterday. “This inception workshop is to get all stakeholders to understand what are the requirements each of them need to provide to CCDA, and through the partners working with CCDA, to ensure that we submit our biennial transparency report by the end of this year to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change (UNFCC).
“We are party to the Paris Agreement so we need to submit the progress, updates and challenges in the report to UNFCC, including the progress of our nationally determined contributions (NDC).
“The report will contain the progress that we have made in terms of our climate adaptation and mitigation actions with our commitments in the NDCs,” she said
