THE Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea (BFPNG) won two categories of the 2021 SP Sports Awards in Port Moresby on Saturday night.
A programme introduced to promote healthy and positive living across the country, Basketball for Good was recognised for the community initiative of the year.
BFPNG’s Hoops for Health coordinator Jordan Sere was also awarded the best photo of the year honour.
BFPNG rolled out the Basketball for Good programme that reached communities, children, women, girls and youths, which helped them to be innovative by participating in positive social activities.
Some of the sub-programmes under Basketball for Good include Mum’s a Hero, Pikinini Hoops, Hoops for Health and Twilight Basketball.
BFPNG executive officer Nick Daroa — who attended the presentation night — acknowledged Fiba for its support, which had boosted the Basketball for Good programme.
“I’d like to thank Fiba, the International Basketball Foundation and Ausaid’s (Australian Aid) Team Up programme for helping BFPNG in running community-based activities in schools and tertiary institutions across the nation,” he said.
“These programmes promote healthy living, awareness on drug abuse and gender equality.
“Promoting healthy lifestyles and inclusive partnerships can initiate positive changes.”
The initiative has also been awarded a third placing in the world for the project roll-out which reached 12 provinces in PNG.
