HIRI-KOIARI MP Keith Iduhu says the selection of East Sepik Governor Allan Bird as the Opposition nominee for prime minister in a no-confidence motion has the “absolute consensus” of all MPs.
He said the decision was reached with “no bickering, no unnecessary debate and no political pressure”.
“This was a decision to assure our country we will support a leader who we believe can do a better job,” Iduhu said.
“We at the Opposition realise the importance of restoring credibility and confidence in our systems and governance, and who better to do it than Governor Bird.”
He saluted Bird for his leadership and commitment to serving this country.
“The backing he has by our team is a testament to this especially when we have two former prime ministers, two former deputy prime ministers, former cabinet members and a handful of first-time MPs who want change for our nation,” he said.
“It’s no secret that some in our team had differing views, opposed each other, argued, debated. But I see a group that has put aside their differences in the hope of securing a better tomorrow for our people.”
He congratulated Kiriwina-Goodenough MP Douglas Tomuriesa on his appointment as the Opposition Leader, and Chuave MP James Nomane as Deputy Opposition Leader.
“The Opposition is in safe hands,” he said.
Meanwhile, United Labour Party leader and Bulolo MP Sam Basil Jr says he is still part of the Opposition and fully supports East Sepik Governor Allan Bird as their nominee for prime minister.
“No matter what, I will stick around with those who have stuck with me through my time in parliament so far,” Basil Jr said.
“I was with the Opposition team during our deliberations for an alternative PM nominee, during our move to Parliament, and the announcement of Governor Allan Bird as our candidate to
become the next prime minister.
“While I don’t think I should entertain such claims of me being absent or in hiding, there is photo evidence of me in these places. Last week Thursday, my senior and highly respected leader Governor Bird, joined me in resigning and to walk out of government after our discussions.
“Yesterday (Tuesday), I was proud to endorse his leadership to become the next prime minister of Papua New Guinea.”
