Boards to access K50mil for programme

Business

COMMODITY boards under the Department of Agriculture and Livestock (DAL) will now have access to the K50 million allocated for the price support programme.
This follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding by heads of respective boards last week.
Each of the commodities have been given a set amount of money according to the revenue they bring in foreign exchange and the volume of production of respective commodities.
DAL secretary Daniel Kombuk said the funds would go towards supporting or subsiding prices of respective commodities including cocoa, coffee and copra.
He said this was the first of its kind for such a programme to be rolled out adding that the programme’s focus of benefiting farmers, where prices would be subsidised was a way forward.

  • Secretary, good initiative!
However, I hope the millions go for the intended purposes, to impact the farmers. In light of so many instances of graft and corruption, incompetencies observed in all of the commodity boards you have named, dubious deals and nonperformances of executive and line managers, and the list goes on, what guarantee do you have that the millions will be well-spent? There must be a clear guideline in disbursing and M&E reports done for compliance.
    Over to you!
