Truckers get K10mil boost

Business

THE trucking business in Papua New Guinea is a big operation that demands high capital but has continued to thrive for many years despite its small margins,” a senior trucking executive says.
PNG Trucking Association Inc president Jacob Luke welcomed a K10 million funding released by the Government to support the industry on Friday. Luke who owns Mapai Transport – one of the country’s biggest trucking company – said the Covid-19 pandemic had hit businesses in the country.
He assured employees, companies and stakeholders affiliated with the association that they would be looked after.
“This may not put us back to where we were but we are so grateful for the support and there is a lot of people suffering but we have to look after our employees and the institutions that finance us,” he said.
“It’s not a great feeling to get support from the Government because we want to work for it and earn it ourselves.
“It’s better off being given to areas that need it most, we feel bad that we are receiving this assistance but we have plans in place.”
Acting Minister for National planning and monitoring Rainbo Paita said the money was a commitment made by the Marape-led Government.
“I was privy to be in that meeting with the former planning minister and the PM, it is one of the many commitments the government is working towards retiring,” Paita said.
“We understand that the Covid-19 hit the country and businesses hard, the Government is fully committed to ensuring commitments made are honoured and retired.”

  • The government must come clear on the release of K10 million to trucking companies because the money was promised to those trucking firms who lost business during the closure of the Porgera gold mine. They did put in their submissions and so they should be compensated for being caught unaware when the government made that short-sighted decision which disrupted normal operations. It was not because of the covid-19 that affected their businesses!

  • This is a scheme, PNG Truckers association is unregistered association, also the Tapako investment is also unregistered. the money is given to selected businesses to benefit for themselves.

    CORRUPT PRACTICE, Must be investigated,

  • Is there such thing as local PNG Shipping Association who can get K10 Million from the government too?
Remember, there are FOUR REGIONS in PNG in which three of the regions rely on ships to ferry people and cargo… be fair!!
