THE body of a man was found washed up at the Department of Civil Aviation beachfront in Lae early yesterday.
Lae Met Supt Chief Insp Chris Kunyanban confirmed receiving such information but said the body was yet to be identified.
“The body was (that of) a male between 25 and 30 years old and was in the sea for four to five days,” he told The National.
“Since he was in the sea for too long it was already decomposed.”
Chief Insp Kunyanban said the body was taken to Angau Memorial Hospital morgue but no one had come forward to report a missing person.
Julian Roney, a mother of two who resides near the area, was the first to see the body at around 5.30am when she went out to collect firewood along the beach.
“It was still dark when I went out,” Roney said.
“At first I thought it was a log that the current had washed ashore, but when I went closer to have a good look at it. I realised that it was a body.”
Roney said she called security guards from nearby shops to have a look and inform police and health authorities about it.
Police and health workers arrived later and took the body to Angau.
