THE national bodybuilding team is still holding out hope it will be able to attend the world titles in Thailand next month (Dec 4) despite missing last month’s South Pacific Championship due a lack of funding.
PNG Bodybuilding Federation president Steve Bomal, said he was unsure of the situation surrounding their travel arrangements as he was in Goroka and not in contact with the organising committee in Port Moresby.
“May be we will be facing the same financial problem like we faced last month that prevented our travel to Fiji for the South Pacific challenge,” Bomal said.
Bomal said that the committee had written a sponsnor-seeking letter to the PNG Olympic Committee and other state and private sector organisations seeking for sponsorship.
“We will just wait for their call. “Our athletes haven’t given up and are still training so at least some can compete at the world titles.
“It’s important for us to carry our country’s flag at the world titles because we want to be recognised and also maintain our status as an active bodybuilding nation.
“Our top bodybuilders need to be exposed and we only have two overseas shows — South Pacific and world titles — lined up so I’m appealing to the PNGOC, PNG Sports Foundation and other interested businesses to assist us so we can travel to Thailand.”
Attempts to contact PNGBBF treasurer Mary Anne Sakarias for comment were unsuccessful.
