MEMBER for Nawaeb Timothy Bonga has slammed Police Commissioner Tom Kulunga for the stand-off
between members of the force.
Bonga, who was appointed police minister in the Somare regime, said the country, especially the nation’s capital, was facing a political crisis and not a law and order situation to warrant bringing in police mobile units from the highlands.
“In the past few days, we have witnessed a stand-off between police units loyal to upholding the law and those who are protecting an illegal government,” Bonga said.
He said Fred Yakasa was appointed by the Somare regime after the Supreme Court ruling on Dec 12 and was only doing his duty as a professional police officer upholding the Constitution.
Bonga said neither Internal Security Minister John Boito or Prime Minister Peter O’Neill “can revoke Yakasa’s appointment”.
He said the matter was now before the courts and he urged Kulunga and his men to respect the court process that would take its course and not to intimidate people.
