THE Port Moresby Boromas claimed the Southern Conference title of the Export Rugby Championship after beating the Daru Stingrays 46-14 in their final fixture yesterday.
The Boromas showed their class and experience as they put in a dominant performance piling on the points against the Stingrays, crossing the try-line six times.
Opening the account for the Boromas was fly-half Jonah Kautu Jr, with older brother Tisa converting the try to give the Boromas a 7-0 lead in the 15th minute.
The Boromas were awarded a penalty in front of the uprights five minutes later, with the elder Katu making no mistake for a 10-point lead.
The men from Western could not be faulted for their effort as they dealt out some stinging defence as well as playing their attack-oriented brand of rugby.
They had their moments, with scrum-half Kasel Kidua slipping in under the uprights for fullback Serki Sisa to add the extras and narrow the gap 10-7.
Whatever momentum the Stingrays had was soon neutralised by a successful penalty-goal by Kautu and that blow, as well as a lift in intensity by the home side through their pack, led by veteran Willie Rikis, props Tony Sipa and Wesley Thomas, started to grind the Stingrays into submission.
The 10-minute period before halftime was telling as the city side inflicted further punishment on the westerners, running in three more tries to take a commanding 32-7 into the break.
The Stingrays did well to keep the Boromas to two converted tries by Desmond Korpok and Jayjay Garrison, while going in for a five-pointer of their own through Bernard Wyborn.
In the other round three game, the Gaigais thumped the Oro Fuzzy Wuzzys 41-13.
