Boxing set for 3rd show

PAPUA New Guinea Professional Boxing will host its third show in September in Port Moresby which will involve eight fights as well as amateurs.
PNGPB president Elvin Wafewa said the Sept 10 show at the Sports Inn, Waigani, would carry on the momentum built up by the first two shows and he expected the action to improve given the boxers were in the groove and ready to face off against each other.
One of the highlights of the show will see a rematch between Johnson Kapus and Theo Torot – the pair first met in 2013 which the more technically sound Torot won on points.
“In 2013, Theo was declared winner after edging Johnson on the scorecards but Johnson says he has been hoping to for a rematch so he gets that chance in the third bout of the show,” Wafewa said.
Kapus has never been stopped as a pro while Torot is a willing brawler with a suspect chin.
Wafewa said the success of the September fights would be a great lead-up for their planned fourth show to be staged in Bougainville.
He said his group needed to secure sponsorship for the two shows.
PNG Professional Boxing also hopes to take three of its best fighters to overseas shows at the end of the year with president Wafewa saying their success of their 2017 calendar would depend on funding.
“In order to achieve our goals, we need support from business houses and the government.
“We are also doing fund raising activities to raise money to host our next show in September.
September show tickets are on sale for K15 (pre-sold) and K10 (at the gate).
