PAPUA New Guinea lost teir opening game but the first day of the Fifa Under-20 Women’s World Cup produced plenty of thrills and spills for the local fans.
Four games produced 22 goals although PNG failed to find the net against Brazil at the Sir John Guise Stadium.
The Brazilians pummelled the local women 9-0 before 12,000 fans on a warm, humid evening in  their group A match, with Gabi Nunes Da Silva, Yasmin Assis Ribeiro and Brena Vianna De Oliveira scoring two goals each.
A Brazilian and a Papua New Guinean copped a yellow card each.
Mami Ueno rammed in three goals and Yuka Momiki two as Japan clobbered a hapless Nigerian side 6-0 in a group B game.
In another group B match, Spain’s Lucia Garcia scored twice in their 5-0 win over a young but feisty Canadian side.
North Korea surprised Sweden 2-0 in the other Pool A game.
PNG put on better second half to concede only three goals in the half but the games was truly beyond their reach by then.
Coach Lisa Cole however was proud of her team’s performance, commending her charges for a valiant effort against a classy Brazillian side.

“I am very proud of the effort of the players despite the scoreline,” Cole said.
Cole said supporters and fans should remember that it was PNG’s first world cup.
Cole praised  goalkeeper Lavina Hola and Nicollette Ageva who had good games in a team outclassed by the visitors.
Brazil put on a samba dance that PNG will remember for a long time.
