Online training for Covid-19
Sister Lavara Kaivavore, a community health worker at the Angau Hospital in Lae, is among the first health workers in Papua New Guinea to commence an online training programme on the Covid-19 preparedness and response. “This virtual training has more than I expected, it is a great opportunity for me to learn in order to be better at what I do as a health worker and also supports me to train my staff on the right things about Covid-19,” Kaivavore said. Developed for doctors, nurses, community health workers and clinical management staff, the Covid-19 healthcare e-learning training programme contains practical resources and scenarios and is accessible on a smartphone, tablet or computer.

Homebrew items confiscated
various homebrew processing items were allegedly found in the homes of people in Pari village in Port Moresby recently. The Police NCD/Central Divisional Command in a statement said they found the items following a community clean-up initiative carried out by councilors, village court officials and police. “The homebrewing apparatuses were confiscated and destroyed while the offenders were told to give up this illicit activity or face the law if they were found repeating the same offence,” police said.

Diplomat proud of heritage
Benson Saulo who is part Papua New Guinean and Australian has been appointed as Australia’s consul-general to Houston, USA, according to a statement from the Australian High Commission on Facebook. “I am very proud of my Australian Indigenous and Papua New Guinean heritage, I feel blessed to have such rich cultures in my life and I hope that children in communities and villages across our countries feel that they can have a positive impact through their actions and dreams,” he said.

Malnutrition rising: Scientist
MALNUTRITION is becoming an issue in most rural areas and many projects the Department of Agriculture and Livestock (DAL) and its partners are engaged in are on the edge in those areas. Principal scientist with Inland Aquaculture Support Service Ltd Douglas Kawa said their priority was to address the chronic issue in rural areas.

Catholic bishops meeting
Catholic Bishops from across PNG met in Port Moresby recently for their annual general meeting. The bishop held talks on evangelisation, health, education, and family life. The theme for this year’s meeting was,” Our Laity: Holy and Formed.”

Police recover stolen bus
Port Moresby Water Police recovered a stolen bus at Papa-Lealea outside Port Moresby last Wednesday. Police said armed criminals held up the driver and occupants of the bus at the Porebada junction and drove off with the vehicle earlier that day.

Car robbery suspects held
Four suspects involved in a car robbery at Baruni in Port Moresby last Tuesday have been arrested, Met Supt Perou N’dranou says. He said all suspects involved would be charged.

Expatriate held up
Armed criminals held up an expatriate at the Rainbow Estate at 9am last Friday and drove off in his car. Police recovered the vehicle at Red Hills, Gerehu Stage 3B.

Dept to have website
After four years of being without a website, Department of National Planning and Monitoring will soon have one after signing a contract with a firm last week. The contract is valued at K297,000 and will enable completion of the website within a month.

Doctor focuses on delivery
THE newly appointed provincial health authority chief executive officer in Morobe Dr Kipas Binga has promised to focus on an effective delivery of health services to the people. “We have to make the system that has been put in place work for the good health of our people,” he said.
