THE Private Companies’ netball competition opened its season in a colorful fashion with all teams jumping into the court to register their first points in the competition at the Rita Flynn courts yesterday.
The match between last season’s grand finalists Westpac and Bank South Pacific (BSP) went down to the wire with the two teams boasting the services of PNG representive players facing off against each other.
Westpac led by current PNG Pepes captain Monalisa Leka at goal attack and ace goal shooter Betty Kila made sure their rivals were covered in all departments.
But, it was BSP’s sterling performance from wing attack Gassy Moka, and former PNG Pepes Renagi Mulina putting in a 100% effort, sinking the ball into the rings to collect the valuable points.
The bankers went into the sheds with the scores levelled at 9-9 at the halftime break. The hit was on in the second stanza as the two sides were more determined to walk away with a victory.
BSP were looking at causing an upset and erase the bad memories from last year’s grand final loss, with young Moka coming out firing from the sheds, and keeping a very close watch on very experienced Westpac outfit.
Leka and her chargers kept their cool and managed to contain their firm battle with the scores locked at 19-19 at final whistle.
In other premier division matches, Nawbawan Super Limited defeated Daltron 25-11 and Brian Bell gunned Fairdeal Liquors 17-11.
