BANK South Pacific Life PNG Ltd has donated medical equipment and refurbishment items worth K30,000 to Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) to be used in its emergency department.
The donation, which included safe airway medical equipment such as laryngoscope sets and resuscitator bags among others, came after an assessment.
PMGH director of medical services Dr Kone Sobi said the equipment donated were important instruments that doctors and nurses required, especially in resuscitation scenarios.
“We don’t often get funds that we could use for capital infrastructure expansion or refurbishment every time so this is very timely (for us) to at least have some improvement in the working area,” he said.
Clinical director of the emergency department at PMGH Dr Sonny Kibob said the department had been struggling for the last 10 years to have the most basic resources to keep their services functioning and the equipment donated was a timely assistance to boost them.
“We normally run short of the consumables and because this year we’ve been hit hard by the Covid-19, we’ve been struggling in getting all those resources for covering the Covid-19 as well as normal patients,” he said.
Apart from the safe airway medical equipment, the donation included basic items that hospitals needed like wash basins, garbage bins and fold out tables. BSP country manager Nilson Singh said it was important to build public private partnerships to support the country’s health system, especially with the impact of the Covid-19 on the country’s health system.
