Build more prison infrastructure

Letters

PRISON is a place of regret, guilt and, most importantly, change.
Most people take prison as a way of punishing the guilty but I consider prison as a place of change, giving inmates a different view of life by realising their crime and accepting their punishment.
When we talk about the development of prisons, I’m referring to the infrastructure and the capacity that a particular prison has.
I strongly recommend that more prisons should be built as crime is increasing rapidly.
And crime not as in tribal fights or the killing of sorcerers, white collar crime or that committed by those in charge of government institutions, for they are the reason behind why our country is so behind in development.
For example, take the electoral commissioner of Goroka, his employees have been working without pay for months and yet he has the guts to ask for funds to help with the by-election in Goroka.
So the question is, where/what did he do with the funds that were entrusted to him in the first place?
People fight for a position but it is useless when you don’t know the responsibilities that come with the job.
That is the problem with our country, because unorganised or simple-minded people are in a position of authority and don’t even know their roles and responsibilities.
If I am to describe the above scenarios in one word, it would be “corruption”.
So if there were a lot of prisons, then such people need to be brought to justice and punished for their crimes.
It is time for our leaders to think big rather than having a mind of a child and doing the same thing over and over.
As the Bible says: “It’s time to pull out the weeds in the garden.”
PNG needs to do this so that we may flourish.
It is high time we change the way we think.
Let’s do things differently.
