MOROBE’S Bulolo Amateur Boxing Association will co-host the national championships with the help of the district development authority, according to an official.
The tournament will be held at Zenag Station, Bulolo, from April 29 to May 1.
A total of 120 boxers and officials across 19 affiliate associations are expected to attend the tournament.
“We are proud to co-sponsor the national boxing championship in support of Bulolo Amateur Boxing Association,” Bulolo MP Sam Basil said. “It’s great for my district and Morobe.
“We welcome all the boxers from around Papua New Guinea.”
Basil challenged boxers to do their best to impress national selectors and qualify for international events, including this year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
He said this was the second time for Zenag to host such an event and the authority would continue to provide support.
PNG Boxing Union president John Avira said: “The union promotes female boxing, so we want women to compete in the championships too.”
He appealed to the associations to prepare their female boxers for the event.
The tournament will also be used to identify boxers for next year’s Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands.
