THE upcoming Digicel Cup season will be crucial to the make-up of the Papua New Guinea Kumuls squad for the end-of-year Rugby League World Cup in England, says an official.
Digicel Papua New Guinea senior vice-president Lorna McPherson said the Digicel Cup was one of a number of competitions from which players were selected for representative duties.
She said the company was keen to improve the standard of the country’s premier rugby league competition.
“As major sponsors, we recognise the importance of rugby league as the national sport,” McPherson said.
“It contributes to nation building by promoting discipline and builds character among players.
“If you look back 11 years till now, the competition has been growing and we want to make it better.
“We are introducing technologies like video refereeing (bunker).
“We will continue to give live coverage on TV Wan Action and Loop PNG.
“We are making this investments so that players are given that exposure.”
McPherson said the competition encouraged healthy living among players and fans.
PNG National Rugby League Competition manager Ora Gairo thanked Digicel for the continued sponsorship. He said the Digicel Cup would continue to market local talents to the Hunters and competitions overseas.
