BULOLO MP Sam Basil Jr says the district is yet to fully assess the effects of the 7.6 magnitude earthquake which struck rural Morobe on Sunday, and felt in other parts of the country.
After attending a Sunday church service at Bangulum, Basil visited parts of the Bulolo Highway on his way to Bulolo Town, after receiving reports of cracks along the highway and in town.
“We can’t release any information as yet regarding casualties from the earthquake, but so far I’ve only inspected certain areas where there are minor cracks on the road,” he said.
“Commuters and PMV owners using the road just need to take precaution as we don’t know the effects of the earthquake below the ground,.
“There’s also loose rocks falling from nearby hills and mountainsides. So just keep an eye out when you’re on the road.”
Basil is waiting for reports from the rural areas to come in before an assessment could be done to determine the casualties and the extent of the damage by the earthquake.
“It’s a natural occurrence,”he said.
“If the situation requires government intervention, then we will step in to assist where and when necessary.”
