THE Gingen and Kendik communities of Bulolo in Morobe will now have access to a proper water supply thanks to the Wafi-Golpu Joint Venture (WGJV).
The project, funded by WGJV and officially opened last Friday, includes a newly-constructed water supply source, installation of three water storage tanks, new taps, sinks, showers and toilets.
The project was done in partnership with AT projects under WGJV’s water and sanitation hygiene (Wash) community development programme.
The project will improve the lives of more than 500 people by providing clean drinking water, washing facilities and improved sanitation.
External affairs superintendent Sheila Harou said during the opening ceremony that: “We’d like to see our communities and our people live a healthier lifestyle free of sickness and waterborne diseases.
“We want our mothers to have easy access to clean drinking and washing facilities and give them more time to attend to other important household needs.”
The project involved the construction of a new dam, three large storage tanks, six distribution tanks over 6km of connecting pipes and the installation of 23 showers, 23 drinking taps, 23 laundry sinks with taps, and 23 toilets for the villages.
Women’s representative Martha Sai thanked WGJV, saying that the project would make their lives easier.
“We go to the gardens and when we come home, we still have to go out again looking for water. Now it’s easier for us, so thank you,” she said.
Gingen community leader John Nema praised the efforts of WGJV in helping the communities since it started the exploration programme in the Wafi-Golpu area.
The opening also saw the presentation of certificates to 20 women for completing associated community mobilisation and health awareness training.
