BUMNENG claimed the Wawens Cup with a penalty-shootout win over 10 City United after an extra-time stalemate between the sides at the Lae Football Association Park on Wednesday.
The sixth edition of the offseason football tournament ended on Wednesday with the men’s, women’s and Under-17 finals.
To kick off proceedings, a Manolos Aviation helicopter circled the park six times before delivering the Cup to the tournament organisers upon landing.
Iwos, of Sambio village, Bulolo, edged defending champions Ramu Sugar 1-0 to claim the U17 title.
In the women’s final, the game was on the line between Wawens and Bumneng with both teams playing out a 1-1 stalemate at the end of extra time.
But Wawens had the last laugh after running out 4-3 winners in a penalty shootout.
The men’s final, featuring a number of Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League players, went down to the wire but it was Bumneng who held their nerve to claim the shootout win.
The top-four teams of each division received cash prizes and trophies.
For the men’s division, Wawens Blue pocketed K1,000 after they secured fourth spot. The third-placed PS United took home K2,000 and 10 City United received K3,000. Bumneng walked away with K4,000 and the Cup.
The organisers also awarded rural teams with appreciation trophies. The teams were Waso (Wampit), Dagua Wawens (East Sepik), Munum, Bona Fida (Goroka), Finschhafen, Ngarodau, Nayudos (Teptep), Ven Stones, Bay Side (Madang) New Town Jets (Madang) and Sisi Sharks (Siassi).
