A GIRL, believed to be four years old, died at the Erima-Wildlife roundabout yesterday after being hit by a PMV (Route 501A) bus travelling to Sogeri from Gordon, in Port Moresby, according to traffic officer-in-charge Snr Insp Joseph Salle.
Snr Insp Salle said the girl’s grandmother was also hit by the bus when they were crossing the road.
He said the grandmother sustained several injuries and was receiving treatment at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
Snr Insp Salle said the bus crew were arrested and questioned by police.
“The driver said he was not looking at the road because he was chatting with someone in another vehicle on the road and did not notice the girl and her grandmother crossing the road at the crossing there,” he said.
Snr Insp Salle said the driver would be arrested.
“The arrest will be made based on the girl’s death and injuries sustained by the grandmother,” he said. “I have instructed my case officer to arrest and charge the driver as soon as possible.”
Snr Insp Salle called on motorists to be aware of road signs and city authorities to ensure that road signs were visible enough for motorists to notice.

  • There are so many reckless pmv drivers in POM. They don’t know what the terms “PUBLIC MOTOR VEHICLE OR PMV MEANS!!. Such drivers should have their licences cancelled for life.

RTA also needs to wake up from your long overdue sleeping beds

  • Most PMV operators need to refresh their knowledge on traffic rules. I had experiences were I witnessed PMV’s running on full speed through road crossings. Not only PMV drivers but motorist in general as well. MVIL wake up call.

  • MVIL conduct some awareness of road crossing inside UPNG campus. Students at the main bus stop use the crossing road as if they own the road. They do not wait for the cars to stop before crossing and still use the crossing after 6pm. Who in their right mind will stop at the crossing road in the night??

Even the PMV buses stop and wait for passengers at the crossing sign causing great danger to the pedestrians and oncoming vehicles. Its best passengers should get on buses that stop next to the bus stop rather than getting on the bus that stops elsewhere.

Big awareness urgently needed here before someone gets hurt!!!
