Bus operators may lose licence if they fail to follow health safety rules

BUS operators have been warned that their licences will be cancelled if they fail to comply with Covid-19 health measures.
Road Traffic Authority chief executive officer Nelson Terema said everyone should by now know the health measures issued by the National Pandemic Response Controller David Manning.
Buses must:

  • carry only up to 15 passengers;
  • ensure passengers are wearing masks before they board; and,
  • ensure their hands are sanitised.

Bus fares have been increased by 50t to K1.50
Terema said the orders would be enforced by their enforcement unit, police and bus terminal workers employed by the city authority.
“Due to limited manpower and social distancing, enforcement officers could not be assigned to buses. However they would be stationed at bus stops around the city to ensure buses comply with orders,” he said. “Anyone not complying will be dealt with. We can cancel their licence.”
The restrictions apply to taxis too, with only two passengers per vehicle.
Terema said operators were expected to clean and sanitise their buses every day and wear masks.
The public are urged to report any mistreatment or non-compliance of orders with the RTA hotline number 76505044.
Terema said the Covid-19 was already in the country with positive cases increasing daily.
“Everybody needs to take ownership of this. We must be responsible for our lives and (the) lives of other people.”
