Gamato charged with breaching with bail rule

ELECTORAL Commissioner Patilias Gamato has been charged with two counts of failing to comply with bail conditions.
Gamato, 53, of Sapa village in Huon, Morobe, was alleged to have interfered with state witnesses on the Feb 11 and 12 this year, breaching bail conditions imposed by the National Court earlier while he faced official corruption charges.
He was released on a K1,000 police bail and is expected to appear in court this week.
The case on the earlier official corruption charge had been adjourned to Aug 26 for the prosecution to reply to the submission by defence counsel. Police prosecutor Sgt Chris Iga told the Waigani Committal Court he needed two weeks to go through the submission before making a reply.
Magistrate Ernest Wilmot allowed the adjournment.
Gamato was arrested last year on allegations of official corruption involving the election manager for National Capital District Terrence Hetinu in 2017.
Hetinu and another electoral official were arrested on June 27, 2017 after police allegedly found K184,300 in cash and marked ballot papers on them.
The incident delayed polling in Port Moresby and prompted Gamato to sack them.

  • The whole fabric of PNG life is endangered when “state witnesses” go bleating to the police and didn’t accept Tomato’s attempts to bribe them. Or maybe the fault is with Tomato. Weren’t the bribes large enough? In my day 1,000 kinas would have been sufficient, but perhaps 2,000 is needed now. Thankfully there is still time for Tomato to get his act together and lift his offer.

  • Government should change him with a more competent person. Poor one.. that one how..Let him go home and bed rest..
