Bus stops not safe for women, girls

Letters

THIS is a rant and frustration towards the National Capital District Commission (NCDC) and NCD Governor Powes Parkop’s administration.
I am a law-abiding, tax paying female resident of Port Moresby who is sick and tired to be hassled by pick pocketers and opportunists at the Gordon and Unagi bus stops.
I am one of hundreds of women and girls who navigate this dangerous area, dreading every morning and afternoon to have to be on alert, watch our bags, and be prepared to ward of thugs.
When will this stop? We deserve to move around freely.
Separating the bus stops means that people are at more risk, street vendors are a cover-up for thugs and with Covid 19, they wear masks making it difficult to identify an assailant.
The slogan ‘Amazing Port Moresby’ seems to be applicable to certain areas only and in other areas.
People are ignored and left to fend for themselves.
We want to progress but we still don’t have solutions to such issues.

  • This is true. Many Pigs and Dogs roam around Gordons and Unagi areas snatching, harassing and intimidating our women folks and the weak. There is no longer any police presence. I believe they will go there when there’s an incident (can’t understand). Yes, police reservists are being called off too, downsizing the numbers of police personals, therefore, it is a very big question. Although the governor put people to look after such areas, it always turns out that these very people responsible to look after the area becomes the very people to destroy that area again. A unit needs to be established around the capital city to identify the very people doing nothing but tend to take part in such illegal activities and send them back to their home provinces, or else, establish a prison camp and put such ‘pigs & dogs’ there and give them hard labor (like breaking stones for gravel to build structures for the nations, or farming, etc… I believe God made them for a purpose, why not use them!)
